Equipping Essentials

As it gets closer and closer to the day when we bring the baby home, I wonder, "What are the true essentials?" What things are you mothers sure that you could not have lived without. What are some things you wish you had gotten the first time around? I figure if you can help me out, I will avoid some discomfort in the begining!

I mean, I can figure out a few things for myself... The baby needs a crib, car seat, stroller... What else? What kind of bottles am I supposed to get? Do I really need a boppy? These are questions that I am sure you can answer - when I come up with more, I will let you all know!

Love you all...

A boppy is great but not an essential! I love my bundlemee and wish I had one for Jonah. I also love my swaddlemee. It is great when they first come home.

Every baby and momma is different, but for me a boppy was essential. I also loved the swing, baby bajorn, and pack-n-play.

Well I could write and write and write some more about what I think is essential. I am agreeing with Sarah, my boppy is essential. Newborn size onesies, you don't know how small they will come out being. I gained well let's not discuss how much weight I gained and Wesley came out 6lb 13oz. Receiving blankets. I loved the Target brand Circo ones. Wesley has never liked his arms down so the 2 Swaddleme's we were given were washed and never used. I was also given a Bebe Au Lait nursing cover. I tell everyone it was the best gift I have gotten. Back to the onesies you can never have too many. They poop and then they need another. Wesley didn't wear anything else for weeks. We also keep tiny wash cloths on the changing area to cover certain parts that like to get mom and dad and Wesley wet if you aren't too careful. :) Only if your baby is a boy though.

Lets see....it can be a daunting task of finding just what you need and maybe could do without. I have loved my bouncy seat with both boys. It's a safe place to put the baby while you shower, make dinner, or whatever. I have not ever really used the bobby for feeding with either boy, but have loved it for its other perks. I actually used it with Philip in his bassinet, which helped him to feel snug and secure in the first days. Hey, whatever gets them to sleep for longer periods while not in your arms. Another item I have loved is having a car seat that clicks into the stroller-very handy. I guess i could keep rambling, but those are just a few of the items I could think of right now. Maybe we all should take a trip to the baby store to help you register! Wouldn't that be crazy.

The only thing you technically have to have is a car seat. Leanne is right though... invest in a travel system! Even if you can only get the car seat now, you can add the stroller later. A few "luxuries" we've really enjoyed are our diaper wipe warmer, our temporal artery thermometer (now only $35 at costco, as opposed to $50 at Babies'r'Us), and our sided to side swing. The truth is you only need as much as you want to clutter your house with. (Needless to say, we've cluttered our house quite a bit!) The registry guides will make you feel so overwhelmed when you look at them. Just remember, people have been doing this for thousands of years before there ever was a baby warehouse! And most of them only had one baby blanket!!!

Hi, Tina! I found your blog through Alicia's, and I thought I'd answer your question. The things that I cannot live without with my babies have been my Fisher Price Ocean Wonders Cradle Swing and the Aquarium (that attaches to the crib), a reliable breastpump (manual or electric, depending on your needs), my Bundleme for cold weather, and with Ethan I got a Bebe Au Lait, which has been so wonderful that I wish I had it with the first two. I also really love my Itzbeen timer because it's been the only thing that kept me on schedule with Ethan when I was getting no sleep and I had two other kids to worry about. My Graco travel system has been wonderful, and it's been nice that the baby seat has also worked for my double stroller, which we needed once Sammy came. There are probably a ton of other things I could mention, but those are the ones off the top of my head :o).

Of course, every person is different. I have found little use for my Boppy, and the temporal artery thermometer I bought at Costco seemed very inaccurate. I found better results with a $10 vicks rectal thermometer. So, like the other Sarah said, every baby and mommy is different!!!

Oh, I forgot to mention: bottles... don't go out and buy a whole ton of one kind, because babies have preferences!!! I found that out the hard way!!!! Patrick liked the Playtex Ventaire, Sammy liked the Soothies, and we used the Playtex nursers with Ethan. The ones they hated were the Breastflow and the Avent, though some babies love those! So... don't go overboard until you know, because you might end up like me with a gigantic box of unused bottles :-O.
